I’ve been looking for an outlet to discuss not only the new HBO series but also the books, especially with the upcoming release of A Dance with Dragons (July 12th) and while twitter has been fun, it is a little hard to filter things properly. I chatted with Maerech over at My Middle-Earth Network and he welcomed the idea of creating a group over there to discuss this. While not technically Middle-Earth, there are quite a few similarities – the least of which being dragons!
I’ve set up a group, so if you don’t already have an account create one and then join the Game of Thrones group. Then there are forums for that group where I want to break things up into different areas:
- HBO Series Discussion (no spoilers)
- HBO Series Discussion – spoilers OK, just warn people
- Book Discussions – Dance with Dragons speculation, etc. – expect spoilers here
If you’re like me and just can’t get enough of these, come on over and join in the discussions!
Overall I’ve been pretty impressed with the first two episodes of the Game of Thrones, even though they may not have totally lived up to my personal hype – but that was a high bar to reach for. Visually it matches very well with what I expected after reading the books. The pacing still seems a bit slow, but the book does start off a little slow as well but things do ramp up pretty quickly. I am planning on going back to re-read the books as even though it has only been a few months since I read them I’m still forgetting quite a bit. So far, Tyrion is stealing the show but I’m sure as things pick up others will also step up and shine like they did in the books.
When talking with folks about the books, one of the things that kept me reading and hooked was the totally surprising plot twists that seem to be all over the place. There’s not too many that you lose continuity, but enough such that you once you have things all figured out, someone gets killed or betrayed. Here’s hoping this popularity finally pushes Martin to get the rest of the series finished up as I have no clue how this all is going to play out and REALLY want to know! The next book is slated for a June 12th release date, hopefully the next isn’t far behind.
The best news coming recently was the announcement that based on the numbers of the premiere, HBO is picking up the show for season 2 which will cover the second of 3 released books. I’ll be curious to see what the timing is for these as I can’t imagine they’re super quick to produce, but hopefully slightly shorter then the Hobbit and/or Lord of the Rings
One other thing I wanted to touch on was the length of this series as there’s a 10 show series covering the first book which roughly comes in at around 800 pages. By comparison the LOTR books are roughly 400 pages and had run-times of between 3 1/2 and 4 hours means we’re getting to see more of this world then we did of the LOTR Trilogy. However, there did seem to be so much going on in the Thrones books, so I’m sure we will still end up having things cut out.
Anyone else out there watching this and what’re your thoughts based on whether you’ve read or not read the books?
And is anyone else wishing someone would grab this IP for an MMO?
This might actually get me to subscribe to HBO! I’ve been a bit down on series in general after all the unfortunate production issues that have hit Spartacus after its first season but this one has me quite excited. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, The Game of Thrones is the first book in the “A Song of Fire and Ice†which is a four book series written by George R. R. Martin. I’m only about half way through the fourth book but I can’t remember another series outside of Tolkien that has captured my interest as much as this series.
The only thing better then this series would be the announcement that they’re making this into an MMO!
The first teaser came out ealier this summer:
And this is the more recent one that shows much more of the story and characters:
