LOTRO Rise of Isengard Itemization Developer Diary
4Today Turbine posted a new Developer Diary talking about the itemization coming with the Rise of Isengard expansion. One of the big encouraging things for me was the intent to incentivize all sorts of player types including solo, crafters, raiders, and casual groupers. Of course, we still have to actually see it, but I was encouraged that they’ve identified there is a problem and are working to try to fix it. The pure fact that many still raid OD (all my characters do) with numerous pieces of the Moria sets highlights that we’ve been stuck in an item rut for a long time.
The first two points of the diary were to identify the big problems they’ve been facing:
- Stat caps and how players would hit them caused all sorts of problems and confusion. This forced Turbine to put certain stats on certain items, and because of the removal of that cap we will see all sorts of options in Isengard.
- Incremental upgrades were just too small as there just really wasn’t a need to upgrade your armor sets. Why spend all the work to get that next higher set when you’re only getting a stat boost of a few points? Coming with Isengard will be a significant jump in these benefits and I’m expecting that we’ll all be upgrading our current gear VERY quickly.
After those assumptions and fixes were laid out, they continue with how these changes will be applied for the various player types:
- Solo players will be able to get four out of 6 pieces of their raid set from skirmishes in addition to all the other upgrades available from questing and the epic line. We’ve already seen some great epic line rewards lately with the Orange items most wear and the 2nd Age Class Legendary Items in Volume 3. This for me is great and I love the options get the gear and it still nudges folks to group up to get those last 2 pieces to complete the set and get the really cool bonuses.
- Crafters will gain additional reputation recipes (not surprising as they’ve been doing this with each new reputation added) as well as trade-able recipes dropping from raids. Hopefully this will bring crafted items back into the fold as viable items as I really like the ability to mix and match items for what I want to focus on and what I enjoy in game, while still maintaining some level of overall statistical quality.
- The big change for the “casual grouper” is that in addition to the options for the solo players, you will be able to loot actual gear in skirmish and scaled instances. This could be the biggest part of the diary for me as now you will want to run these instances to get specific items to upgrade your characters as currently there’s just too few good items that drop.
- And of course for the raiders, they get all the above benefits but the ability to complete their class raid armor sets. This sounds very similar to how the Moria set worked in that the 4 pieces were from the 6-mans and the last two from the raids. With Isengard, those 4 pieces can be achieved in any sized group (including solo) with those last 2 being part of I’m assuming the Draigoch raid.
Two last things they touch on before wrapping up the diary are “yellow items” and Finesse misconceptions. In short, the yellow (uncommon) item drops will be buffed significantly such that you’ll actually care about them again. They’ll still be less powerful then purple drops, but much closer then they currently are such that they’re not automatically vendor trash.
As for finesse, the main goal with the system is to not go back to the Radiance grind but to make it desirable for people to have at least 3 on-level items to sufficiently contribute to the raids success. This means you could solo grind it, craft it, or raid for it which to me reminds me of what radiance was supposed to be. I’m all for this system as I like the idea of making people do something to be raid ready, but not force them down any specific path to get there.
Overall, I love the concept of this diary and am very excited about what all this means. There are still lots of details to be worked out, but the concepts get us back to where we were during the Rift raiding days that many point to as the glory days for LOTRO end-game.
To go a step further, this provides real reasons for people to run the scalable instances like Helegrod, Annuminas, etc and skirmishes at the level cap for more then just those set armor pieces or marks. If done right, this re-opens all this content back up to people even at level 75, adding a TON of end-game content without tasking lots of developer resources for new space design and spending those resources on new cool shinies! I’m totally blown away with the concept of having all these raid and end-game spaces available that will provide meaningful rewards for every level character and can’t wait to see the new cool stuff!
LOTRO Shots of Orthanc and Gap of Rohan
3Well we didn’t have to wait too long for them to release some of the most anticipated images in the LOTRO landscape. This for me is a big one as outside of Moria, this is the next biggest thing I’ve wanted to see in game. I really can’t wait to stroll around the area – although I’ll probably be kiting a fair number of orcs in the process
The images look spot on for what I was imagining even before seeing them in the movies, but I’m still quite curious to see how much of the area is actually open to us.
The Rohan shots look intriguing as well, it will be interesting to see how all those play out in the storylines. I do like that we see the same images as on our pre-order horses and armor, but I’m guessing that won’t get us any farther in the reputation grind
Check out the shots below, some cool stuff for sure!

LOTRO Isengard Beta Starts July 27th 2011
2They’ve been hinting at this for a while, but the formal announcement hit that Turbine is starting the Isengard Beta next week!
This round is by invite only, and will be under an NDA so consider this a closed beta program which I’m sure will become open sometime closer to the actual launch date. Turbine’s NDA is further restricted by the fact that you can’t even admit you’re in the beta program, let alone talk about any of the details, so keep that in mind if you’re one of the lucky ones to get an invite. These email invites will be sent out “soon” and I’m assuming they’ll include the directions to download whatever client they’re working off of. Hopefully it is Bullroarer such that some folks may have a patching head start, but we’ll have to wait and see, I wouldn’t necessarily suggest grabbing Bullroarer unless you have lots of spare disc space and download time.
For all of you who are lucky enough to get in, I only request that in addition to checking out the new cool areas, I want to see the Orthanc too, remember that this is a testing event and they do need you to help test and trouble shoot things. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had certain areas, functionality, classes, etc. that they want people to focus on so try to keep active on the forums. The more you can break now means less that has to be patched when the game goes live!
Certainly exciting news and good luck to all of you wanting to get invited and to your fruitful testing!
Star Wars: The Old Republic Pre-Order Dilemma
5<Update> Thanks to @DragonTamerBrat for this press-release confirming the September beta weekends. They’re still vague on the release date though just saying they’re targeting a Holiday 2011 release. This still doesn’t sway me totally, but is nice to see confirmation of some of the rumors. <Update>
I’m sure you’ve all at least heard that pre-orders are open for SW:TOR and I’m also guessing many already have pre-ordered. I also wanted to point out Syp’s post breaking down all the pre-order goodies as it really helped me figure out and understand what’s there. And it was nice to find that I wasn’t the only one who didn’t get some of them
Now this comes at an interesting time as I’ve been trying to figure out how I feel about this game. I’ve really cut back on how much I follow this game from the high-point when I was reading every official post and TOR fansites as well as all the podcasts in addition to writing about the game to now just getting my SW:TOR fix from the other bloggers that I follow. Part of this was just purely being hyped-out and not being able to handle that much about a game that was so far out in terms of a release. I also was soured by some of the revelations that TOR wasn’t going to be as game-changing as it was hyped to be. For a long time, I was actually seriously planning on not playing this game at all based on that and some of my other issues with Bioware.
Just recently though I’ve had a bit of a change of heart, and it primarily came from watching the leaked Beta footage of the game. What occurred to me was that TOR for me, feels more like KOTOR 3 with some additional DLC and potential for other awesomeness. However, once I looked at it that way, I was no longer disappointed about anything as I loved the KOTOR series and could see paying a normal box fee and some time in a subscription that would essentially equal what I would’ve, and did for Dragon Age, paid for a good story based RPG with some added DLC. Thinking about it that way, I don’t care about any of the other “downfalls” of SW:TOR and can look at it as fun solo RPG, as a worst case with the potential for it to be something more then that.
I’m now firmly back on the excitement train and am upping my investment in following the game as I’m trying to get prepared for when it finally hits.
But that brings me to my current problem in that as excited as I am by this new revelation, new for me at least, I have to decide if I really want to shell out for a pre-order on a game that still has a nebulous release date. I know there’s speculation about September testing with a “holiday” release date but it just bothers me that they’re looking for people to loan them that money at least 3 months. Not to mention I’m a little surprised by the $150 price tag for the collector’s edition as it seems a tad on the gouge side of things. I guess I’m mainly just skeptical that TOR will launch “on-time” and I’m not sure I want to reward the hype machine with my money.
I don’t mind pre-ordering early and have done for just about every time for LOTRO, but I can’t think of a pre-order I’ve done or even one that I’ve seen without a release date.
I’m pretty sure I will be pre-ordering, but I’m more on the fence then I thought I would be and there’s a good chance I hold out for a while until there’s more solid release information. Part of that is also based on the fact that I have no interest in the box Collector’s edition and don’t see them running out of the Digital one. Certainly I expect them to stop offering it at some point, but there’s not quite the same cap on those.
What’re you all doing or can you offer any wise (or un-wise for that matter) advice?
