Obtaining LOTRO Legendary Shards
14Scott asked in the comments on the new community relics about the best way to obtain shards to create the various extraordinary relics for your Legendary items. I figured I’d put up a quick post with the information to make it a little easier to find. Sadly there really isn’t an easy way to farm shards as they’re only available from refining (breaking down) existing relics. The return is as follows:
- Tier 1 – 1 shard
- Tier 2 – 2 shards
- Tier 3 – 9 shards
- Tier 4 – 32 shards
- Tier 5 – 79 shards
- Tier 6 – 192 shards
- <Tier 7> – 464 shards
- <Tier 8> – 1119 shards
- <Tier 9> – 2696 shards
- Crafted – 158 shards (Varies based on Tier)
I included the old tier 7-9s as some (like me) do have them laying around. I ended up breaking down old 7s and 8s that I wasn’t using but that’s not necessarily accessible to everyone.
Now if you don’t have many relics to break down, you need to go out and get some more.  I prefer the skirmish route as you can barter for the relics using your marks. You can barter for Tiers 1 through 5 costing between 23 and 1534 marks, or less for tier 5s if you use third marks. Looking at the shards per skirmish mark you get the following:
- Tier 1 – 23 marks per shard
- Tier 2 – 43.5 marks per shard
- Tier 3 – 20.1 marks per shard
- Tier 4 – 8.5 marks per shard
- Tier 5 – 19.4 marks per shard
If you’re going this route, Tier 4s are the best value you can shoot for. It also is a better value to barter for Tier 4s and combine them for Tier 5s then to barter for Tier 5s as you’ll save 712 skirmish points that way. All other tiers you’re better off bartering for the higher tier as you’ll save versus the combining return.
Previously I had posted that gathering tier 1s was the best bang for your buck which isn’t necessarily the case (until Update 3) as you only get 1 relic per combination. Knowing this you’ll probably either want to wait for Update 3 or buy higher tier relics. This becomes even more tricky when you consider how much is costs to combine relics:
- Tier 1 – 2s
- Tier 2 – 6s
- Tier 3 – 22.5s
- Tier 4 – 82.5s
- Tier 5 – 240s
So while it is easier to get to the Tier 6s, it will cost you a hefty chunk of coins (720s per Tier 6) to do it.
The last option of course is that you can buy tier 1-4s via the store. Personally I don’t like this option, but it is there for folks that want to take advantage of it.
In summary, if you’re looking to farm shards go out and get higher tier relics. The best value seems to be Tier 4s but depending on how things work out after update 3 that may change. But you might want to wait until Update 3 hits live before doing too many combinations.

Some really interesting looking pieces that’s for sure and quite comparable to some of the other drops as well.  I know my Minstrel will be going after some of these and quite possibly my Captain.  I’m not sold on the items for my Warden, but I will have to double check.
News for all EU LOTRO Players
1For those of you on the EU servers (and I know there are quite a few) it was announced today (thanks to Twitter for this one) that Turbine is taking over full operations of LOTRO as of June 1st, 2011. According to FAQ you will need to perform a one time “migration†process. It seems like a seamless transition with everything coming over automagically, but as we all know there are quite a few places for “Murphy†to pop out of the box and cause some problems.
One thing I did notice was that the Codemaster’s forums are not getting transitioned, so if there’s any good nuggets you might want to move them somewhere else as it sounds like they’re getting purged
Take a look at the FAQ and if you’re on the EU servers, speak up to make sure all your questions get addressed.
